Electronic Drum Kit Tips

So how do you select the best electronic set suitable for you?

There are different features to consider when investing in an electronic kit. We’re going to list the most important ones.

Nice to Haves You’ll be able to customize your experience fully if you can afford to pay more for some extra accessories and features.

All-in-one systems Some electronic systems will allow you to mix your own songs or to use built-in songs as a background.

These are great features if you’re interested in composing a few of your own songs or if you want to get used to playing with a band. Built in music and song apps are a great way to learn and practice drum skills.

Teach me how Some systems will have specialized beginner modes that’ll teach you different skills as you go along.

These apps will also be able to correct mistakes you make so your work will sound like that of a pro in no time.

It’s all in the look If you’re going to be rocking out, why not do it in style? There are many sleek and modern designs that are both nice to play on and nice to look at.

Modern designs with LED displays and light features will probably cost you more.

But if you’re going to be playing on a stage, you might want to think about the image and style you want to offer your fans.

Warranties If your system doesn’t come with an extended warranty you can always get one from the music store.

It’s a great way to give you peace of mind and possibly save some serious cash in the future if something should malfunction.

Options Some electronic systems have both wireless and plug in options.

These are great for when you’re playing outdoors or when you’re traveling.

What’s important here is to choose the features that align with your reason for getting a set. Don’t pay for things that won’t add value to you or your listeners.

Practicing and Playing Tips

We know we can’t teach you how to become a famous rock star, but we might have some useful tips on making the journey even more enjoyable.

Earphones

Avoid having to face an angry spouse or neighbor. Wear closed earphones to allow no sound to escape or semi closed headphones for a realistic sound effect.

Check Out The Complete Headphone Buyers Guide

Sit Comfortably

Position yourself comfortably on the correct chair to avoid back and arm strain while playing for long periods at a time.

Below video to help you correct your sitting position.

Studio Setup

Finding the perfect spot to practice your drumming skills are very important.

If you don’t have a professional studio, try to practice in a room with no distractions.

Extra Sound

If you’re connecting your electronic system to another sound system be sure to position both systems correctly.

If your sound system or monitor isn’t in the correct position it can cause inaccurate and distorted sound.

Record and Listen

Try to find a system with recording features.

This is a great way to learn from mistakes you make.

You can easily pause and rewind to practice until you achieve perfection.

Entry-level Drum Kits

Are you new on your journey to becoming an experienced drummer?

It can be exhilarating to start this new adventure.

But you can’t do it without the right tools that are relevant to where you are in the process.

Entry-level drum kits really only need the basics and a few features.

Buy a good quality system with features such as installed recording and teaching apps.

Don’t spend too much on your first drum kit unless you’re certain that you’ll be using it for years to come.

Portable and lightweight sets work great for beginners.

Drum Kits for Professionals

If you’re a professional player, you’ll want top-quality drums. You’ll be playing on your set for hours so you might want to spend more on your kit than an amateur player would.

Your system should be hard wearing and excellent value.

Select the best drum multi-pad you can afford.

The Alesis Nitro kit electronic drum set is a great option for any professional musician.

Digital Drum Sets

What’s a digital drum set? If you’re new to the world of drums you might still be wondering what the difference between an old-fashioned drum set and a digital drum set is.

The answer?

Not much if you select a good electronic set. Graeme Edge designed the first electronic drums in 1970’s.

We thank you Graeme but since the 70s, electronic kits have only improved in quality and realistic sound ability.

A digital drum set comes in many forms shapes and sizes.

You can get the full kit that includes everything your standard drum set would have: different percussion instruments, drumsticks, feet pedals etc.

You also get a digital set with no feet pedals and only basic sounds.

Then there’s the more advanced digital sets with different musical instruments and even digital music teachers to guide you while you’re playing. Some musicians prefer a good collection of drums, and that’s great.

But don’t ignore modern technology. Digital drum sets can offer real, true sound.

Here are a few benefits when you’re selecting digital sets.

Songwriting You can easily record and edit your work with digital modules.

Adding different sound effects and instruments are also some of the features these devices offer.

Cymbal Pads These pads allow you to play and practice wherever and whenever you want.

The cymbal pads will make less noise than acoustic drums would.

You can also control the volume of your module so playing in your room can be done without bugging anyone around you.

Compact Even the larger sets are still more compact in size than acoustic drums.

They take up less space making them portable and easy to move around.

Variety You can change the genre of your music with the press of a button! Are you in the mood for jazz?

Or maybe you want to rock out on some metal?

Digital devices allow you to create music on a different level.

The trick is in selecting the right set for the right purpose.

How Does A Digital Drum Set Work?

Your digital drum set needs two main components to work:

  • The pads
  • The trigger interface
  • List Element

The main difference between the sound of an acoustic drum set and a digital drum set is how the sound is produced.

Acoustic drums produce the sound as you’re hitting the pads. In other words, you’ll get a live and immediate sound.

A digital set can produce the same sound but it’s not live or immediate. Sound is transported to the processor via your connected wire.

The item such as the pad you’re hitting on doesn’t really make the sound at all.

The processor recognizes the item you’re playing on and the sound it should make.

If you were to turn your electrical set’s volume down completely and hit the same pad or cymbal you’d hear no drumming sound at all.

If you have a quality sound sensitive set the processor will even be able to tell and mimic the pressure or timing of the hit to create an exact copy of the sound in real time.

You can also change the sound effect you’d like to achieve.

For instance, if you want a studio sound instead of an acoustic sound you can change the setting on your device.

The processor is programmed to recognize and change the outcome of the sound. How’s that for an all in one kit?

In short, sound is created each time you strike the pad with the drum stick or brush.

An impulse is sent from the transducer to the interface much like impulses sent to and from the brain via synapses.

The harder you hit the pad, the louder the sound will be that the interface projects.

Who said drums aren’t using smart technology?

Taking Care of Your Digital Drum Set

If you’re going to spend money on a digital drum set you’d want to make sure you’re taking care of it efficiently. Here are a few ways you can maintain your set properly:

Clean it Make sure you clean your set often in the correct way. (see below)

Cable issues To avoid ending up with a damaged cable, make sure to take care of the cable when you’re transporting it.

Don’t pull on the cable when you want to take it out of the socket.

When you want to unplug the cable, you should remove it by pulling on the plug.

Always disconnect all your cables before you transport your kit.

Traveling 101 Always secure your set from any other heavy devices.

Don’t put anything on top of your set when you’re transporting it to prevent scratches.

Be careful not to drop your electronic set especially if it’s heavy.

Brushes Check the settings of your electronic device to make sure it has a brush setting before you play with brushes.

Never use wire brushes and rather select nylon brushes.

Vinyl Avoid placing vinyl on your device as it can cause discoloration.

Servicing Don’t attempt to fix any problems yourself.

Digital modules are complicated with different wires and functions.

Take it to the company you bought it from if you don’t have a warranty.

Power supply Always turn the power off before you disconnect it from the socket to avoid damage.

How to Clean Your Digital Set

Regular cleaning is very important to maintain the quality of your digital set.

Cleaning an electronic set can be slightly different than cleaning other drum sets.

Here’s how you can clean your set without damaging it.

Wiping your set If you want to clean your set quickly, use a dry cloth to wipe the surface.

Make sure the cloth is made of soft material that won’t scratch your set.

Chemicals and cleaners Don’t use any soap or chemicals to clean your set.

You can use a slightly damp cloth if you can’t remove the stains with a dry cloth.

Don’t let water remain on or seep into the device.

Alcohol Thinners or other alcohol cleaners shouldn’t be used on your module.

Cheap Digital Drum Set

Buying drum sets on a budget? There are plenty of affordable digital sets available.

Before you buy the best cheap electronic drum set, you should determine what you’ll be using the set for.

If you’re an amateur player or beginner, a cheaper option should work perfectly fine, as long as it’s true to real drum sound.

It’s also advisable to start with cheaper sets for children especially if it won’t be used professionally.

Even though experienced musicians can also benefit financially from cheaper sets, there might be a few crucial features missing in some less expensive systems such as pad sensitivity.

Electric Drum Kit Buying Guide

Are you still not sure what to look for when selecting digital drums?

Let’s go into some detailed features and aspects that are important when purchasing an electronic system.

The number of Pieces Electronic drum sets are basically the same as acoustic kits when it comes to the number of pieces included with the set.

Its normal to find kits with eight pieces containing one kick drum, one snare drum, a ride cymbal, three toms, hi-hats, and a crash cymbal.

Kits that have fewer pieces usually exclude the toms or the cymbals where as more pieces tend to increase the price of the kit overall.

Rack Construction As a general rule, you want to choose a kit that has a sturdy metal rack so that no matter how passionate you get while playing, you won’t have to worry about the kit falling apart or the pads coming loose.

This is a bit different to acoustic kits because the toms are usually mounted to the kick drum and there are separate stands for the cymbals.

If this electronic drum set is going to receive a serious amount of action, select a steel rack and avoid anything made from plastic.

Hardware Type If you only planning to use your electronic drum kit at home, then this feature is not that important.

However, if you planning to do shows where you will be breaking it down and setting it up, the mounting hardware the rack uses is important then.

There are some kits that feature a quick release mechanism which makes the dismantling process quick and easy.

It allows you to disconnect the module as soon as they are off the rack.

Input and Output Options Usually electronic drum kits don’t include speakers, so that means you will need to have an amp, computer, or set of headphones if you want to be able hear what you’re playing.

Most kits have a headphone jack which enables you to listen to yourself while you’re playing.

Some also come with a MIDI port which you can use to connect other kits, devices or instruments.

There are also different input options for each kit. Based on your needs, a simple AUX In port will be fine which allows you to feed a song through the kit which you can play along to.

If you want to focus on more complex recording, you might want to look for a kit that has a USB port.

Realistic Sound One of the most important factors to consider when buying electronic drums is definitely the authenticity of the sound.

If you’re going to use your drum set for practice, you’ll need an accurate set of drums.

If you’re using your electronic set on stage or in the studio, the realistic sound is just as important to ensure quality-produced music.

Be sure to test out each drum set before buying.

Hit every drum pad and cymbal as hard as you can to determine the sound authenticity.

Also, play your more delicate softer strikes.

Do this repeatedly on the whole pad and cymbal to make sure there are no weak spots on the system.

Realistic Feel We’ve established how important it is to experience true sound when you select an electronic set.

If you’re serious about drumming you might want to consider a professional look and feel kit instead of a top desk portable system.

Portable and small electronic devices work great for when you’re on the go and want to play and practice without having to move your huge system around.

However, if you’re practicing to use a full kit, the Yamaha DTX522K Customizable Electronic Drum Kit or the Alesis Nitro 8-Piece Electronic Drum Kit are both good options to look at.

It’ll be even better if you can invest in a portable and larger electronic system to give you a variety of drums to practice and play on.

Pad Sensitivity Check the sensitivity of your pad and also the pedal sensitivity.

Although you’d want the pads and pedals to be sensitive to create a true effect it shouldn’t be too sensitive.

If a device reacts too sensitively it can cause disruptions while you’re playing resulting in inaccurate sound.

Portability Are you going to be traveling often with your electronic set?

If your answer is yes you should take your time to research how portable the design is you’re buying.

  • Questions to ask include:
  • Is the stand foldable yet durable?
  • Are the drum pads foldable?
  • Does it have a battery operation option?
  • What’s the length of the cord if applicable?
  • Can the system take the constant wear and tear of packing and moving around?
  • What’s the weight and size of the system?

Portable sets tend to be more affordable especially if they’re smaller in size. Look for a portable design that’ll still offer all the needed functions and features.

Quality  The idea of a drum set is to be able to play your heart out on it right? That’s something you’d want to keep in mind when you’re buying an electronic set.

You want to look for a set that’s durable and has good customer reviews.

Quality doesn’t always necessarily equal unaffordable and expensive devices.

But it does mean you’ll have to do more research before you buy any brand.

Always select a durable and steady stand; your stand should be able to take a lot of wear and tear.

Double check the pads and pedals to ensure you’ll end up with a high quality and long-lasting set.

You don’t want your pedals to feel unstable or move around when you’re using them.

You’ll be able to tell quickly if the pads are durable or not.

If it feels and sounds like a toy drum it’s best as a gift for children rather than for professional use.

Affordability  You’ll have to decide beforehand about how much you’re willing to spend on your set. Ask yourself what price range you can afford and research the available products in that range.

You’ll be able to get extremely cheap designs for less than $100 or $ 200. If you’re looking to spend more on your drum set, you’ll probably have more options available.

The Alesis electronic drum set is a great example of a more expensive set that offers great quality and durability.

Used vs. New Finding a gem in a secondhand store can make anyone excited, especially if you’re trying to save a buck or two.

Buying a used electronic drum set can however be risky.

You’ll never know how old the system really is, or whether the previous owner cared for the set the same way you would.

A lack of care means the set may have deteriorated in ways you can’t immediately determine.

Before you respond to the first electronic drum set for sale sign you should consider a few things:

  • Does it have an extended warranty?
  • Does it have any form of certificate of date purchased?
  • Try before you buy to make sure it’s still working
  • Even if it’s working when you initially test it, know that there’s always the possibility of it breaking only after a few uses
  • Test all the smaller detail such as the on and off switch and the pedal durability
  • If it needs cables or cords make sure you receive it with the system

The last question you should ask yourself is if it’s really worth saving a small amount and not knowing what you’re really getting?

When it comes to electronics especially music systems buying new will always be the better option.

User-Friendly Whether you’re new to playing drums or know your way around any set, simplicity is key.

Easy to use, install and set up systems are always better options.

It’ll make your life easier while playing and practicing if you don’t have unnecessary technology features and settings to figure out and get used to.

Simpler designs are also easier to get fixed in the case of a faulty device or a minor glitch.

Drum Pad Types  Digital sets usually have two different pads. You’ll either be playing on rubber pads or on mesh heads. Let’s look at the difference.

Rubber Pads Rubber pads are very much the same as your usual practice pads. They offer a few benefits:

  • Added consistency: The consistency rubber pads offer will improve your performance and create a realistic sound
  • Affordable: Rubber pads are less expensive than mesh pads
  • Easily portable: Rubber can be put away even in the smallest places due to the flexibility. It’s also able to take a lot of hammering without damaging
  • Even if it’s working when you initially test it, know that there’s always the possibility of it breaking only after a few uses
  • Easy to work with: The flexible bounce the rubber provides allows for an easy and comfortable playing surface

Mesh Heads Mesh heads offer a firmer surface than rubber pads. The benefits you can expect from these pads include:

Adjustable: Mesh heads can be used to customize your sound by turning and adjusting the tension

Authentic sound: Mesh heads will give you the closest sound to the real deal

Easily portable: Rubber can be put away even in the smallest places due to the flexibility. It’s also able to take a lot of hammering without damaging

Sound response: These heads will offer an arrangement of sensitive sound response.

Follow this buyer’s guide and think about the person who will be using the kit and then determine what features are essential.

This will allow you to avoid overbuying if the person is a beginner and underbuying if the person is a more accomplished musician.
